If you place electrical or electronic equipment on the Hungarian market, you are in a stream of your own — and one where the rate per kilogram varies by a factor of nearly seven depending on which category your product lands in. Lamps cost 419 HUF/kg; photovoltaic panels 63 HUF/kg. On top of that, electronics sellers almost always carry a second obligation for the packaging the device ships in, and often a third for any battery. This guide sets out the WEEE categories, the 2026 rates, the size and function boundaries that decide classification, and the compliance choice electronics is one of the few streams to actually offer.

What counts as EEE
Electrical and electronic equipment — WEEE when it becomes waste — is one of the eleven Hungarian EPR product streams. It is identified by the stream codes E01 to E06 and, inside those, by KF groups that separate equipment by function and size.
The scope is broader than "consumer electronics". It reaches from refrigerators and washing machines to routers, printers, electric shavers, watches, musical instruments and games consoles, as well as lamps, luminaires and photovoltaic panels.

2026 rates
The rates below have applied since 1 January 2026 and are unchanged from the level set on 1 October 2025. The fee itself is calculated as declared kilograms × the rate per kilogram:

Note the shape of this table: the small, light products carry the high rate and the heavy ones the low rate. That is deliberate, but it has a practical consequence — a business selling a lot of low-weight electronics can end up with a bill out of proportion to the tonnage it ships.
Where classification gets decided
Three boundaries do most of the work:
- The 50 cm line. The same kind of device can fall into "large" or "small" depending on its external dimension. This separates group 40 from group 50, and group 41 from group 51 for luminaires.
- The 100 cm² screen threshold. Screens and monitors above that display area form their own, expensive group.
- Function over form. Lighting is split off from equipment entirely, into its own lamp groups (30/31/32) and luminaire groups (41 and 51), rather than being treated as small or large equipment.
A caution worth stating plainly: a single tariff heading can appear under more than one group. Heading 8471, covering data-processing machines, shows up both in the screens and monitors group and in the small IT and telecommunications group. So a device sitting near a category boundary cannot be classified by reading its tariff number alone — it needs an individual assessment.
As everywhere in Hungarian EPR, classification starts from the product’s customs tariff number and its nature — the tariff code alone does not settle it. And the consequence of getting it wrong in your favour is not a correction letter: understated data carries a fine of 50% of the concealed fee difference.
You are probably in three streams, not one
This is the point electronics sellers most often miss. A single shipped device typically generates entries in several streams at once:
- The equipment itself, under its WEEE category;
- Its packaging, under the packaging stream and split by material — the carton, the moulded insert, the film, the pallet;
- Any battery, under the separate battery and accumulator stream.
Each is reported by weight under its own code and charged at its own rate. Which of them applies to a specific product needs to be checked product by product rather than assumed.
Collective or individual compliance
Most producers comply collectively: MOHU handles the waste management and you pay the EPR fee, with no direct MOHU data reporting beyond registration and the authority declaration. EEE, however, is one of the streams where individual compliance is realistically on the table — alongside vehicles, industrial and vehicle batteries, and deposit-return products.
Individual compliance means you arrange the waste management yourself. It requires a subcontractor agreement with MOHU, and the fee is then set by that agreement and can be reduced in light of substantiated costs. Two constraints matter: you must declare which route you are taking at registration, in the KGYF-NY data package, and you cannot switch during the year.
Legal basis
The EPR framework itself sits in Government Decree 80/2023 (III. 14.), with the 2026 rates set by Ministerial Decree 33/2025 (XI. 28.). Electrical and electronic equipment has its own dedicated instrument, Government Decree 197/2014 (VIII. 1.), and sits under the EU WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU. Fines are imposed under Government Decree 156/2025 (VI. 23.) by the waste management authority.
